Pleasantly busy and very enjoyable Saturday with some work, some errands, some hanging out with friends, a fantastic conversation with a young reader (we exchanged recommendations for books, including The Phantom Tollbooth and The Mysterious Benedict Society (me to her) and The Book Whisperer and Walk Two Moons (her to me), among others), dinner at a bookstore, browsing through a bunch of books and magazines, wonderful phone calls with t3tccitw, my sister, and a long many-subject conversation with my brother and sister-in-law, and lots of knitting.

I recommend this blog - he's working with a mission that's been working with Haitian children for the last five years. Reading his hourly reports has the obvious impact of immediacy and is quite compelling.

What a fantastic project - Project Night Night - catchy name and a super way to do something for children in homeless shelters, the entirely inadvertent sufferers of some of the worst consequences of some of the worst difficulties of modern life.

The idea is to fill tote bags (theirs) with a security blanket, age appropriate books, and a stuffed animal. Knowing how much my children and T3CCITW loved/love all things stuffed and readable, I think this is a beyond-wonderful idea. Plus, what a great way to begin to open children's eyes to the world around them and to gently encourage empathy as they collect things for the bags. It's probably wise to refrain from discussing homelessness with very young children since they are can be good at worrying themselves into a tither without letting their adults in on it, but, done carefully, this could be a good way to start teaching about compassion, understanding, kindness and even the importance of offering thoughtful assistance.

Specific shelters involved with Project Night Night are in California, Florida, Michigan and Ohio but they encourage us to buy totes and fill them appropriately (read the website guidelines) and take them to shelters in our own areas. PNN will gladly provide guidance and, of course, gladly accept donations of funds or cuddly things and books if that feels more comfortable than doing the delivery ourselves.

Bailout?

The NYS legislature supposedly has worked out a plan to keep commuter fare increases to a dull roar this year, namely 10% as opposed to the insane and usurious 28% they were proposing. At the rental rates we pay in mid-state, that means paying $404 a month (not $471) and I should be relieved. But paying four hundred dollars just to get my feet from home to work still seems appalling. Something is wrong. It's not any news that income and expenses are wildly disparate, but I wish there was a recourse. Other than finding a rich husband or robbing a bank or engaging in the oldest profession (which wouldn't get me much considering my age and looks or lack thereof) or selling all my earthly possessions (which wouldn't net all that much, come to think of it). If anyone has a brilliant or even just a practical suggestion for how to increase income by, say, 15-20 percent, please pass it on.
