Since at the moment there are hardly any subjects of interest other than snow and weather, I want to mention that at this moment, this year, early in 2010, there is visible snow on the ground in all fifty states - even Hawaii which has snow atop two volcanoes - and I think that is awesome although I'm wondering if someone misread something about "global cooling" and thought it said "global cooking" and, in order not to plagerize plagiarize, said "global warming" by mistake. . . .

Discovery of the day: Inky Girl. Interesting, informative, readable. And some pretty funny cartoons for those of us who like books a lot (too much?) and have many quirky attitudes about books.

Gotta love it

Global warming summit . . . world leaders take their own private jets to get there . . . major blizzard disrupts the last two days . . . third highest snowstorm in DC's history greets President Obama on his return from same . . . I'm not quibbling over whether things have changed, climate-wise, but I love the juxtaposition of the above. Mother N is still in charge, I really do believe, and she often makes her dominance clear. Love it.

April 1

I like silliness. Last year I gave one of t2cgitw a medieval castle, one of whose little wooden characters is a colorfully-dressed court jester and I've been working on convincing her that he is at least as important to the daily enjoyment of life in the castle as the prince and his cohorts. So it's not surprising that I enjoyed April Fool's Day.

April 1st is the moment just at the end of Winter and just before Spring when people are encouraged to be sly and amusing. Not hurtful, just making people smile and laugh, perhaps at themselves, perhaps at those who are fond of them. What a wonderful idea.

One of my favorite April Fool's was when I found a gizmo (for want of a more technical term) at a little Greenwich Village store. With it, you could display a small apparently random piece of thread on the front of a garment while on the inside was a bobbin that held yards of the thread. My father was a bit obsessed with things being neat and tidy so if he saw a thread, he invariably reached and picked it off. It was a bit odd when he'd do it to strangers but he simply couldn't help himself, I guess. The first year I used the thing, he dutifully reached over and plucked, only to look a bit horrified as what seemed to be the fabric of my sweater coming apart in his fingers as a result of his attempt to restore order to my appearance. I think I was about 10 and I remember collapsing in giggles. So did he once he realized it was, yes, an April Fool's joke. Amazingly, I repeatedly used the little gadget on several April 1sts after that. Either he had an oddly faulty memory - odd for a college professor who wrote several dozen books - or very nice to his silly daughter and probably as amused as I was by the whole thing. In any case, it was lots of fun so on April 1st every year I try to do at least one silly thing, and I quite palpably miss him and his very funny, silly sense of humor. Happy April Fool's Day!

Square root day

It's square root day! I kept thinking 3/3/9 looked interesting but didn't stop long enough to realize why, so am grateful to USA Today for reminding me why. Next one's in 7 years, 1 month and 1 day (4/4/16).

Rules of Engagement

It probably brands me as a light-weight but I've enjoyed Rules of Engagement from its beginning. It's a pretty standard sitcom in many ways, not a formula I usually find endearing, but I enjoy the show. I'm not sure what it is about Patrick Warburton that slays me - besides his obviously fabulous voice and timing of course - but I laugh at anything he says, anything at all. The rest of the cast is pleasant though not headline-grabbing and I do wish anyone besides David Slade played the goofball because he really really annoys me but you can't have everything.

I'm not sure why RofE stuck in the ever-dyspeptic Alessandra Stanley's craw so deeply yesterday but she really should lighten up. That she managed to summon praise (however faint) for "2.5 Men," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Big Bang Theory" while dismissing "Rules of Engagement" as trite, boring and unworthy is beyond me. It's not exactly high art, but RofE has no pretentions for anything other than being just plain silly fun. And it's marginally better written than those others, or at least I think so. Anyway, taste in light tv fare is highly personal and subjective so it's just-plain-wrong to rank them or say one should be banished and shunned while the others are peachy keen. Anyway, I'm glad it's being given another chance to grab enough of the audience share to hang in there for a few more seasons.
